The Gordon Aquifer, formed over hundreds of thousands of years, is composed of layers of sand and limestone that help naturally filter the water. Located more than 400 feet below the surface, this protected aquifer is an important regional water source.
Because the aquifer is confined beneath layers of clay and sediment, the water remains under natural pressure. When a well reaches the aquifer, the water rises naturally toward the surface.
